Raised on a working Yorkshire farm, with James Herriot as the family vet, he brings a treasure trove of unique stories and local insights. He told us how much he's looking forward to guiding the tour next year and sharing all the Yorkshire locations with followers of the show:
Howard, you must be a big fan of the new All Creatures Great and Small series! What do you like most about it?
I think it’s the way it shows off the beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. The programme is about life in the dales, being a vet and farming – all very close to my heart, as my family used to have a dairy farm in the Yorkshire Dales.
It’s very exciting that James Herriot was the vet for your family farm. Did you ever meet him?
I was born on a farm near Thirsk back in the 1960s. It was a mixed farm, we had Jersey dairy cows, beef cows, sheep and arable…about 450 acres in all. Alf Wright (James Herriot) was our vet. I was too young to remember him but my parents knew him well. They really liked him. I often wonder if my father features in any of the books!
What do you think will be the highlights of Tours International’s All Creatures Great and Small tour?
The countryside in the Yorkshire Dales is stunning…wild, open spaces. Some farms we see on our tour are almost caught in time.
Having been a farmer’s son and lived and worked in the Dales all my life…I can bring a deep, personal knowledge to the tour. We farmed in the late 1950s, 60s and 70s, so I know what it was like.
Can you recommend a couple of locations to look out for on the tour, which people might recognise from the TV series?
Grassington is a very picturesque market town – that is the main filming location for the current series. Upper Wharfedale is special too – we will see Helen’s farm at Yockenthwaite and the church she got married in at Hubberholme.
Name 3 things you love most about Yorkshire.
The scenery – the space. The many farms and villages which seem almost caught in time. The people.
