Tours with all the Easter feels: colour, tradition and spring adventure
Easter in the UK has a special kind of magic. As winter finally loosens its chilly grip, the countryside springs into bloom, historic towns come alive with fun festivities and grand castles open their doors. Here are some of our top activities to really take advantage of the Easter feels.
Top of the list must be the all-important Easter egg hunt. Stately homes, parks and National Trust properties across the UK organise fun egg hunts, often with spring and Easter themed activities alongside and always with the promise of a chocolatey prize at the end!
Animal lovers will really enjoy a visit to a farm, to see all the new baby animals including piglets and ducklings. The lambing season is a big event in spring, and many farms offer visitors the chance to see newborn lambs and watch them being born.
It’s time to throw on the wellies and get out and about as the countryside starts to come alive again. Take a walk through the stunning bluebell woods dotted around Kent and Sussex. Explore nature and take a restorative hike along the Northumberland coast or through Snowdonia. Hire bikes and follow country trails through ancient woodland and meadows.
Celebrate colour as gardens start to bloom. At RHS Wisley, Kew Gardens, Wakehurst and Sissinghurst (National Trust), see daffodils, tulips and bluebells as well as fragrant magnolias, cherry blossom and early wisteria. Take a garden tour, listen to a talk on spring planting and participate in a Q&A session with the experts.
Stately homes and historic castles throw open their doors and welcome spring with Easter events and fun activities. Visit beautiful Leeds Castle, sitting on two islands in the middle of a lake, with its gardens, mysterious grotto, maze, and falconry displays. Or fairytale Hever Castle, childhood home of Anne Boleyn, with gardens bursting with colour. Magnificent Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and promising rolling parkland, exquisite floral displays, water cascades, and a secret garden. Also Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII's riverside pleasure palace, with lovely grounds, beautiful gardens and Tudor history.
Attend an Easter service in an ancient cathedral, such as St Paul’s in London or Canterbury Cathedral.
Take a trip on a heritage railway or a scenic river cruise along the Thames.
Seek out fresh produce at farm shops, artisan markets, and garden centres.
Highlights of the sporting calendar include the famous Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, the London Marathon and the Grand National.
Later in April, St George’s Day celebrates the patron saint of England with activities ranging from festivals and dragon hunts through to medieval banquets and traditional country fairs.
